Recap:
Grrrowl Completes Sweep of Wooster
The Findlay Grrrowl quietly made a statement to the rest of the league and completed its first sweep since its home-opening weekend in a 8-5 victory over the second-place Wooster Oilers Sunday at The Cube.
Mike Balogh had two scores and three assists in a victory in which the Grrrowl out-shot its opponents by a 43-29 margin and, for the second consecutive day, conserved on penalty minutes.
A late second-period scuffle, which resulted in the ejections of Mike Matthes and goalkeeper Louis Morin and initially seemed to go in Wooster’s favor, turned into Grrrowl momentum following two quick goals by Balogh and Zach Bachnak. The scores put the Grrrowl in front 6-4 and ended the second period with a manageable advantage.
Goalkeeping tandem Lucas Fournier, who had 15 saves, and Morin, with 14, kept the Oilers in check and allowed the Grrrowl opportunities to stretch the lead late in the game. Fournier took Morin’s place following the second-period ejection.
The Grrrowl held off the Oilers in the third with goals by Chris Gendron and Kevin Tejchma and coasted through the final minutes to secure the win.
The Grrrowl was penalty-free in Game 1 which set the tone for a thrilling 5-4 win Saturday on late heroics by Kevin Tejchma who slapped in the game-winner with seven seconds remaining.
Bachnak, who sat out Game 1 with pain in his right knee, returned on Sunday and added a goal and two assists. Gendron also had two goals in the contest and finished with four in the series.
